Adrejs Zagars | Stage Director
After graduating from the Latvian Academy of Music and the Film Art Studio in 1982, he appeared as an actor in Latvian and Russian films and at theatres. Since 1996 he has been the director of the Latvian National Opera. The Latvian National Opera has achieved international fame under his leadership. He founded the annual Riga Opera Festival with the purpose to introduce the best productions of the Latvian National Opera. In the past years, he also has been working as a stage director. His productions include Der fliegende Holländer, The Demon (Rubinstein), The Queen of Spades, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, La traviata, Carmen and Nabucco. He has toured with his opera company and directions in various countries including the Dalhalla (Sweden) and the Savonlinna (Finland) opera festivals, the Moscow New Opera as well as Catania and Bordeaux. He debuted in Germany in the 2008/2009 season with Massenet's Werther in Erfurt, and Borodin's Prince Igor in Essen. He staged Don Giovanni in Riga in May 2009.
