On 11 June, the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, prior to the final performance of the Strauss150 Festival, internationally acclaimed soprano and chief artistic consultant of the Opera, Éva Marton with director general Szilveszter Ókovács unveiled the statue by sculptor Sándor Kligl. The bust can be seen on the Sphinx Terrace for two weeks before moving into its final place in the Opera House.
The spectators on the Sphynx Terrace were witnesses to the Opera making up for the lack of a statue of Strauss. Sándor Kligl's work was unveiled to the opening fanfares of Also sprach Zarathustra, one of the best-known melodies by the composer. As a finale, István Horváth (accompanied by Pálma Hidegkuti) performed The Italian Singer's Aria from Der Rosenkavalier.
