“A people can best be known through their folk songs,” claimed Zoltán Kodály, one of the crucial proponents of Hungarian music, whose main ambition as a composer, collector of folk songs and music teacher was to inculcate a love for Hungarian folk song and to cultivate a knowledgeable audience.
On 16 September, Zoltán Balog, Minister for Human Resources, and Szilveszter Ókovács, General Director of the Hungarian State Opera guided the representatives of the press through various spaces and workshops of the Hungarian State Opera to describe and exhibit their conditions before the modernisation of the Opera. According to the decision brought by the Government, the modernisation of the Hungarian State Opera can be realised from 23 billion HUF (7.6 million EUR) to make the Opera House a modern, safe and worthy place of work and entertainment by the spring of 2018.
It is hereby announced that in spite of the illness of Jonas Kaufmann, Attila Fekete and István Horváth, the gala concert Simándy 100 to commemorate the Hungarian tenor legend is going to take place at the announced date and time. The guest star of the evening to accompany seven Hungarian tenors is the excellent Mexican heroic tenor, Rafael Rojas.

A grand season opener awaits fans of opera, ballet and classical music on 24 September 2016. On Saturday, following various open-air programmes, operatic life will resume with a new production of La traviata.
In 2016, the Opera House will once again be participating in the worldwide Car-Free Weekend series with free commedia dell’arte performances on the Sphinx Terrace on the Dalszínház Street corner of the building on Saturday and Sunday, 17 & 18 September to use the noise-free environment and the much better air on Andrássy Avenue.
