Don Carlo – Filippo II
He debuted at La Scala Milan in 1979, when he sang at a production of Verdi’s Macbeth conducted by Claudio Abbado. He has sung numerous roles including the title role of and Leporello in Don Giovanni, Philip II in Don Carlo, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Méphistophéles in Gounod’s Faust, Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, the title role of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and many more. He is a regular guest on many major opera stages around the world. He debuted at the Metropolitan in the 1980/81 season, and has sung at the Paris Opera, the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Vienna Staatsoper and the Tel Aviv Opera. He is popular as a concert singer too. He sang at the special performance of Mozart’s Coronation Mass under the baton of Herbert von Karajan at the Vatican in the presence of Pope John Paul II, which was broadcast worldwide. He is to sing the role of Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier at the San Diego Opera in 2011 for the first time.
