The Georgian baritone graduated from the Tbilisi National Conservatoire, and debuted in the role of Renato in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the Tbilisi National Opera in 1989. Two years later he won first prize at the Francisco Vinas Singing Competition, Barcelona, which was followed by several major European competitions, including the famous Belvedere Competition in Vienna, where he won first prize. His international career began in 1995 with a highly successful performance of Tosca in Augsburg, and Ataneli has been one of the most sought-after baritones by opera houses ever since. His repertoire mainly includes works by Verdi and Puccini as well as verist operas. He has worked with such outstanding conductors as James Levine, Carlo Rizzi, James Conlon, Ádám Fischer, Marcello Viotti, Christian Thielemann and Riccardo Muti. He debuted at Covent Garden in the role of Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana, and in La Scala Milan in the title role of Nabucco under the baton of Riccardo Muti. He is a regular guest artist at the Staatsopers in Berlin and Hamburg. The New York audience could first hear him in the Metropolitan in La traviata and Nabucco.
