New York Tour – Mario and the Magician; Bluebeard's Castle

Operas in one act, in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitle

Bartók's sole opera was first performed outside of Europe on 9 January 1949 in a Dallas radio broadcast conducted by Antal Doráti, and it was first staged overseas by the New York City Opera in 1952. The city's Metropolitan Opera first premiered the work in 1974 and has even included it in its programme for the current season.
This guest performance at the David H. Koch Theater will be the Hungarian State Opera's first time bringing one of the Central European nation's finest operas to the United States as its own production and sung in the original language. Mario and the Magician, the other one-act opera on the playbill, is receiving its American premiere.

Bluebeard's Castle production is played by arrangement with Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., publisher and copyright owner.
