Judit Galgóczy


Director
Judit Galgóczy graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy's teacher training school in Pécs and went on to teach répétiteur skills at the Academy of Drama between 1976 and 1980. In 1984 she obtained her diploma in dramaturgy from the University of Theatre and Film Arts, followed by another in theatre directing in 1988, after studying under László Vámos. From 1988 to 1992 she was the chief director at the National Theatre of Miskolc, and from 1992 to 1995 the artistic head of the National Theatre of Szeged. She has been a freelance artist since 1995. In Miskolc, she founded the opera and ballet department together with conductor László Molnár, directing there Cavelleria rusticana, Il trovatore and Carmen. In Szeged, she staged Andrea Chénier, Stravinsky's Oedipus rex and Marco Tuttino's La Lupa. Her Szeged production of Il nozze di Figaro received the award for best directing at the Pécs Theatre Festival 1992, and her Macbeth, also in Szeged, won her the Dömötör Prize for best directing in the 2014/15 season. She has directed both The Tales of Hoffmann and The Magic Flute in Debrecen. She was still a student when she first directed at the Opera House, with a staging of Donizetti's Il campanello. She has also directed Pagliacci, Il nozze di Figaro, Suor Angelica and Il trovatore at the Opera House.
