Igone de Jongh was born in the Dutch city of Haarlem in 1979 and developed an interest in ballet from the age of six, studying first at the National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam and later at London's Royal Ballet School. She joined Amsterdam's Dutch National Ballet as an aspirant in 1996 and by 2003 had been promoted to the rank of principal. During her training, she won the Arnold Haskell Award, which was followed by the prize of the Stichting Danserfonds '79 foundation in 2002 and the Alexandra Radius Award in 2003. In 2012, the magazine Dance Europe listed de Johngh as one of the world's one hundred best-known dancers.
Famed for her exceptional interpretations of the classic ballet repertoire (such as Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty), de Jongh is also known as Hans van Manen's muse. She has danced in pieces by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, David Dawson and Wayne Eagling.
She is married to fellow dancer Mathieu Gremillet.
