For many years now, the Hungarian State Opera has contributed to the success of one of the noblest social events in Hungary, one whose 200-year history had thus far remained unbroken: the Anna Ball held in Balatonfüred each summer. And while the current situation means that the ball has been cancelled for this year, this does not mean that the audience at the picture-perfect lakeside resort town will have to miss out on every single programme. Why? Because the Opera will once again be appearing there on Gyógy Square, this time with a special screening on offer. No everyday version of English Baroque composer Henry Purcell’s opera The Fairy Queen, Ándrás Almási-Tóth’s truly remarkable 2016 production boasts live jazz interludes, sets by Sebastian Hannak that evoke the world of 1940s film noir and, of course, world renowned singer Emőke Baráth in the title role.
