Austrian actor and film director Franz Tscherne was born in Graz in 1964 and by the age of 19 was performing on prominent stages across Switzerland, Germany and Austria, playing numerous major roles ranging from Shakespeare, Goethe and Molière to Goldoni, Horváth and Schnitzler in the theatres of Zurich, Basel, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna. He has worked with such renowned directors as August Everding, Hans Hollmann, Hellmuth Matiasek, Rudolf Noelte, Robert Lepage and Leander Haußmann. Apart from his theatrical work, Tscherne has appeared in many films and television programmes, including Axel Corti's Radetzky March and in Inspector Rex. As time passed, he started taking on more and more roles in musical dramas, such as Percsik in the production of the musical Fiddler on the Roof conducted by Stefan Soltesz at Essen's Aalto Theatre. He has also appeared as the narrator in Albert Lortzing's opera Zar und Zimmermann in a concert-format performance with the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Leopold Hager and as Dante in Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's work La vita nuova. He also served as the speaker in Bavarian Radio's broadcast of Arthur Honegger's La danse des morts, under the musical direction of Ulf Schiermer, who also conducted Rilke's Cornet, as set to music by Viktor Ullmann, at Munich's Prinzregententheater in December of 2007. Tscherne debut on the opera stage, however, had first come in 2003, in a production of Ariadne auf Naxos at Venice's Teatro la Fenice. He repeated the role of the Major-domo to great acclaim at the Teatro Malibran under the musical direction of Maestro Marcello Viotti. In February 2009, he played the role again at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. His other notable portrayals include Orpheus in Yevstigney Fomin's Orpheus and Eurydice, directed by Klaus Peter Kehr at Opernhaus Wuppertal, and Niklas in Heinrich Marschner's opera Hans Heiling at Strasbourg's Opéra national du Rhin.
