Gábor Káli
Conductor
Gábor Káli, who won the 2018 Salzburg Festival's international conducting competition and took both first prize and the orchestra prize at the First Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in that same year, was born in Budapest. He started his music studies as a child on the piano and violin and went on to win awards at several national piano and chamber music competitions during his student years. He began his training as a conductor at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music before transferring to the Universität der Künste Berlin in 2004, earning his degree there in 2008. He was then admitted to the German Music Council's Conductors' Forum, which allowed him to take part in conducting courses with renowned teachers and conductors, including Bernard Haitink and Colin Metters. In addition to taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the conductors' forum, he also conducted at master classes under the guidance of Péter Eötvös and David Zinman (then the music director of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich). He played as an orchestral pianist in the European Union Youth Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy at the Aldeburgh Festival founded by Benjamin Britten, and has been asked to audition for the Staatskapelle Berlin by Daniel Barenboim and for the Boston Symphony Orchestra by Andris Nelsons. He has held positions at several German theatres, most recently as first conductor and deputy chief music director at Staatstheater Nürnberg. He has taken the podium as a guest conductor with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Camerata Salzburg, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, the Hungarian State Opera and Munich's Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.
