Vincenzo Bellini

I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues)

23 May 2016, 7 p.m.

Erkel Theatre – Main stage

In Brief

Opera in two parts, four acts, performed in concert version, in Italian, with Hungarian surtitles

Before dying at an extremely young age, Bellini left the world such marvellous operas as Norma, I puritani and La sonnambula, but what few people know is that he can also be credited with a bel canto opera based on the story of Romeo and Juliet, which is an unusual piece in that the composer wrote a trouser role, sung by a mezzo-soprano, for the character of Romeo.
On this occasion, we will be premiering the four-act opera at the Erkel Theatre in two-parts, in a concert format, as part of the Shakespeare400+ Festival.
Klára Kolonits will be featured in the role of Juliet, and Szilvia Vörös will be making her debut as Romeo.
