Born in Kroonstad, South Africa, Levy Sekgapane studied with Kamal Khan and Hanna van Niekerk at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. From the very beginning of his career, he established himself internationally with two Rossini roles that have become his calling cards: Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, performed in new productions at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Opéra national de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Opéra national de Bordeaux; and Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, which he has sung at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Staatsoper Hamburg, Semperoper Dresden, Los Angeles Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and Opernhaus Zürich, where he shared the stage with Cecilia Bartoli.

His wide repertoire also includes: Idreno in Semiramide (Berlin), Libenskof in Il viaggio a Reims (Liceu Barcelona, Copenhagen), Lindoro in L’italiana in Algeri (Zurich, Düsseldorf), Rodrigo in Rossini’s Otello (Frankfurt), Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles (Cape Town), Ernesto in Don Pasquale (Vienna, Hamburg, Bari), Arturo in I puritani (Paris, Erl Festival), Elvino in La sonnambula (Munich, Erl Festival), Arbace in Idomeneo (Salzburg), Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Paris), and Jonah in Time of Our Singing (Brussels).

He recently made his debut at Teatro alla Scala in Milan in the title role of Mitridate, a role he has also performed in Paris and Montpellier. On the concert stage, he has appeared with the Munich Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, BBC National & Concert Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, National Orchestra of Spain, and Copenhagen Phil, among others.

Levy Sekgapane is the winner of the first prizes at the International Belvedere Singing Competition (2015), the Montserrat Caballé Singing Competition (2015), and Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition (2017).
