Born in Montevideo, the Uruguayan–Italian tenor Leonardo Ferrando began his studies at Teatro del Centro and Escuela Universitaria de Música, taking thereafter private lessons with Prof. Cecilia Varela in Buenos Aires and Mtro. Jorge Ansorena in Firenze. Following his European debut in La Cenerentola at Bremen Theater, he specialized in the belcanto repertoire, singing amongst others, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Le Comte Ory, Guillaume Tell, Linda di Chamounix and Beatrice di Tenda. His career took him to Berlin, Innsbruck, Malmö, Bergamo, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, working with recognized stage directors like Michael Hampe, Peer Boysen, Robert Carsen, Fabio Sparvoli, etc. Role highlights include Almaviva, Don Ramiro, Comte Ory, Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Nemorino, Orombello (Beatrice di Tenda), Tamino, Don Ottavio, Arbace (Idomeneo), Fisherman (Guglielmo Tell), Beppe, as well as leading tenor roles in “rare operas” from Giovanni Pacini and Emilio Arrieta. He took part in the final rounds of prestigious competitions such as Neue Stimmen Singing Competition, Competizione dell’Opera (Dresden) and Francisco Viñas. He was granted awards in the Aldo Baldin Singing Competition and in the International Mozart Singing Competition of London and received substantial scholarships from FONAM (National Fund of Music), Teatro del Centro, and SUDEI (Uruguayan Association of Performers).
