The young Austrian baritone Adrian Eröd is already a great favorite of public and press at his base, the Vienna State Opera, with his tremendous diversity, whether as Figaro in Rossini’s Barber of Seville, as Valentin in Gounod’s Faust, as Britten’s Billy Budd or as Lescaut in Massenet’s Manon. His magnificent success with Christian Thielemann as Sixtus Beckmesser (Meistersinger von Nürnberg) led to an invitation to sing the role at the Bayreuther Festspielen, then later also in Zurich, Cologne, Leipzig, Tokyo and Amsterdam. His performance of Loge (Das Rheingold) in the Vienna State Opera had attracted international attention, his creation of the role of Shylock (André Tchaikovsky: The Merchant of Venice) at the Bregenz Festival was highly acclaimed, and in 2014 he debuted at the Salzburg Festival as Faninal (Rosenkavalier). Since his debut 2001 at the Vienna State Opera as Mercutio (Roméo et Juliette), he has been cast in such roles as Guglielmo, Conte Almaviva, Eisenstein, Albert (Werther) and Olivier (Capriccio). The leading male role of Jason in Aribert Reimann’s Medea was written for him and he performed the world premiere. He has also appeared at the Semperoper in Dresden (Olivier, Faninal), the Teatro Fenice in Venice (Harlekin), at the Hamburg State Opera (Pelléas), at the Oper Frankfurt (Prospero in Adès’ The Tempest), the Tokyo National Opera (Don Giovanni, Guglielmo, Eisenstein), the Paris Opera (Olivier), the Houston Grand Opera (Don Giovanni) and the Chicago Lyric Opera (Dr.Falke). Following his education at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Vienna, where he was a student of Walter Berry, he was engaged at the Landestheater Linz, then Wiener Volksoper and finally the Vienna State Opera. Eröd is also successful on the concert stage. He has appeared among others with Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic, with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Bach’s Matthäuspassion.
