Ágnes Romhányi obtained her degree in Hungarian and Italian from Eötvös Loránd University's Faculty of the Humanities in 1976 and has been an instructor at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music since 1979. Between 1980 and 1997, she also worked as an editor and dramaturg in Hungarian Television's music division, and in 1991 became a dramaturg with the Hungarian State Opera. In addition to some three dozen operas, she is also credited with the Hungarian translations of musicals, operettas and numerous prose works from their original Italian, German, English, French and Russian. She has also created translations of musical works from Hungarian into Italian (including, for example, of J. Strauss's Die Fledermaus), as well as her own original librettos [for Iván Madarász's Lót (Lot) and Ferenc Darvas's Szerelem a palackban (Love in a Bottle)]. She received the Kálmán Nádasdy Award in 2003.
