This time, instead of the stage, the silver screen takes center stage! For a special occasion, the Hungarian State Opera opens its doors as a cinema. 

At the screening on February 8, the biographical drama Maria (2024) will be shown, portraying the life of Maria Callas, one of the world’s most renowned opera singers. Directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, the film follows the legendary artist during her final years in 1970s Paris, as she confronts her own identity. Adding a special layer of excitement, several scenes were filmed in the Andrássy Avenue Ybl Palace itself, allowing audiences to watch the film while seated in the very spaces that appear on screen. During the filming period, the actress also visited the Opera House, where she was deeply touched by Verdi’s Requiem.

An evening when the walls of the theatre truly transform into the world of cinema.
