Thomas Hampson
Details
In Brief
The world-renowned American baritone, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday, sang in choirs and studied music from childhood. After winning several competitions, he was taken under the wing of the legendary coloratura soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, which helped launch his European career. Throughout his career, he has performed nearly all the major baritone roles in the operatic repertoire, while also including rarities such as works by Busoni, Szymanowski, and contemporary composers. It would be almost impossible to list all the awards, honours, and prize-winning recordings of this artist, who is also highly active as a concert singer and has frequently appeared in Hungary. In 2010, audiences at the Opera House saw him in a gala concert, one highlight of which – by his own admission – was the duet from Simon Boccanegra performed with László Polgár. Thomas Hampson returns to the Ybl Palace in the fifth season of Stars’ Recitals with Piano.
