After earning his degree in applied graphic design at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1973, Ferenc Cakó went on to win the grand prize at the National Amateur Film Festival in 1973 and 1974, first for his hand-drawn animation Petőfi, and then for his stop-action animation Ókulária. From 1973 to 1991, he worked as an animator, designer and director at Pannónia Film Studio's puppetry workshop, run by Ottó Foky. In 1978, his own film career started, chiefly with the clay-animation films popular at the time, and he later was invited by Hungarian Television to create the series Tóbiás Sebaj (1982-1985) and Zénó (1985-1988). In addition to making films, he has organised solo exhibitions of his graphic designs, paintings and film installations. His sand and sculpture animation film Ab ovo won the Palme d'Or in Cannes, and his 1994 sand animation Sand won the Golden Bear award in Berlin. In 1995 he established his own studio: C.A.K.Ó. Studio. He has taught at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design since 1997. He designed the animation for the Opera's production of Macbeth.
